York

This page is under construction

We visited York Cathedral on Thursday 14 October, 1999

Notes from Fr. Roger's 'The Pilgrim Manual'

The see of York is really at the very heart of our story and I hope we manage to piece together the various comings and goings of Wilfrid this week in general and today in particular (see the brief life story). Wilfrid was Bishop here and fought for the see when he was deposed from it. It was at the heart of his appeal to Rome. He deposed Colman, the Celtic Bishop when he first came here and imposed Roman disciplines and customs . He restored the Minster, installed glass in the windows ( a revolution in Church building) and was an enlightened, if severe, Father in God. Today is where we get, I think, to the core of what St.Wilfrid and his life and ministry is about. After visiting the Minster there is an opportunity to have a quick explore for some lunch (try the Shambles, over the road from the Minster), and then we are off to Ripon.
