Christopher Newport Died 4th November 1917

The magnificent silver plated cross in memory of Christopher Newport, who was killed in action in the First World War, has been located and completely refurbished in St. Wilfrid's Church Centenary Year. The cross has now been placed at the main altar position.

Christopher  was the son of Henry and Louisa Newport of 'The Anchorage' in Park Road and was a private in the 1/4th Bn. of the Royal Sussex Regiment.

He died on the 4th November 1917, aged 20, and is buried in the Beersheba War Cemetery (now in Israel), grave ref. G65.

His name appears in the original St. John's Roll of Honour volume, and is also on the memorial in the Hospital.

Our thanks to John Hawkins for the research on Christopher Newport
