Joan Stevenson 1920 -2000

Joan died peacefully on 23rd July 2000 at Church Farm Residential Home, East Wittering. The funeral service was held at St Wilfrid's on July 28th and for those who were unable to be there, I would like to review, briefly, the wonderful service starting with Joan's favourite Sonatinas by Clementi (piano). She was fond of Handel's "Where E're You Walk" which was sung by our godson, John Norcliffe. We had excellent music throughout by Rex Latter, Helen Woods and the choir, who sang the anthem "Lead Me Lord".

From a collection of notes by family and friends, Fr. Roger recalled amusing and forgotten incidents from Joan's past. I find comfort in the memories of more than fifty years of married life BEFORE her admission to Church Farm eight years ago.

Together with the Parish Curate, she formed and led a Youth Club in Handsworth, Sheffield. During one instance of riotous behaviour, she grasped two culprits by their collars, only to discover that one of them was the curate! Her years as an auxiliary nurse at the Sheffield Royal Hospital, gave her great fulfilment, as indeed did her musical talents. If she heard a tune once, she could immediately play it by ear (and fingers) on the piano or the organ. She accompanied my singing, played for dancing and occasionally deputised for the church organist. Her oil paintings live on but she may well be remembered most for her laughter which continued throughout her life, even to the very end!

Please accept my profound thanks for your support over the past very difficult eight years and for your recent messages of sympathy.

Most sincerely Cliff.
