The Great War Memorials of Bognor and District
In 1919, a temporary cenotaph was erected at the junction of West Street and High Street. In 1921 a permanent cenotaph, in granite, was unveiled at the top end of Waterloo Square, and in 1936 this was moved to its present site outside the Town Hall. After the Second World War the dates 1939 and 1945 were added. Neither of these two cenotaphs bore any names.
Also after the First World War, a reredos was commissioned for St. John’s Church in London Road. It was consecrated in 1920, and was donated by the inhabitants of Bognor in memory of their fellow townsmen, and their relatives and friends, who gave their lives in the Great War of 1914 – 1918. After the demolition of St. John’s, the reredos was transferred to St. Wilfrid’s, which had become the Parish Church. A Roll of Honour in the form of a book was also produced, containing the names of 222 servicemen from the area who had died in the War.
The Parish of South Bersted produced its own memorial, which is on the wall inside the church. It contains 104 names.
In the Lady Chapel of St. Wilfrid’s there is a tall pew, on the back of which are carved the names of 24 former pupils of Holyrood School in Victoria Drive, who died whilst serving during WW1.
The real War Memorial for Bognor was the War Memorial Hospital itself, in Chichester Road. It was originally in ‘Springfield’, previously a private house. The Bognor Observer for Wednesday 23rd July 1919 reported the opening of the hospital, and mentioned the ‘fine memorial tablet on which is to be placed the names of those men of Bognor and the district who have fallen in the war’.
When the size of this hospital was found to be insufficient for its purpose, an appeal for funds was launched for a new building. The new Bognor War Memorial Hospital was officially opened on 24th September 1932 A report on its first year was published in the Bognor Regis Post dated 30th December 1933, and included the comment: ‘Entering the oak panelled hall, the first thing that catches the eye is the list of those from this district who fell during the war.’ This was the oak memorial that had formerly been in the original house. It is now in the much more recently erected present building.
Intriguingly, the report goes on to state: ‘And here I may mention a curious mistake that was made when the list was compiled. It contains the name of a member of a well-known local family who served in the war, but returned unscathed’.
In fact, this memorial contains the names of three men who served during the war and survived it. Two of them are also in the Roll of Honour. The Hospital memorial also shows the name of a woman, Elizabeth Kate Franklin. She had been married to a sailor who was killed in action in 1914, and later married a soldier, who survived. A civilian, she died in December 1918 and is buried in Bognor Cemetery.
The surrounding parishes of Aldingbourne, Eastergate, Felpham, Pagham and Yapton produced their own memorials. There were two War Memorial Cottages in Felpham, later converted into a single dwelling. In the porch is a memorial tablet inscribed with the names of the Felpham WW1 dead. The list differs from that on the memorial in Felpham Church.
There seems to have been no set method in the preparation of lists of names for any of these memorials, and it is quite common for the same name to appear on two or more of them, and for there to be differences in spellings and initials.
The accompanying list includes 435 names and represents an attempt to include every serviceman from the Bognor area who died during World War One. This area includes Bognor, Bersted, Pagham, Felpham and Middleton. Names from Aldingbourne, Chichester, Eastergate and Yapton are only included if they also appear of one of the Bognor memorials.
There are four categories of serviceman included:
a The majority, who are named on a memorial and have a known local connection.
b Those named on a memorial and identified, but with no local connection discovered.
c Those with a known local connection, but not named on any local memorial.
d Those named on memorial where the individual has not been identified.
Christian names are normally represented by initials only, and details of rank or service unit are not given on the majority of local memorials. Many of these contain errors of varying significance. When the book containing the Bognor Roll of Honour went missing, a replacement was commissioned, based on the Hospital Memorial. In addition to the mistakes already there, it contained a lot of new errors. Fortunately, the original volume has been found and is now in St. Wilfrid’s Church.
Another type of memorial was the bronze plaque awarded to the next of kin of each serviceman who died as a result of the war. This illustration is of the plaque that was given to the family of Stoker P.O. Richard John Gumbrell, who was born and bred in Bognor, but whose name, strangely, does not appear on any of the local memorials.
Statistics
Of the 438 men listed, 122 served in the Royal Sussex Regiment. Not surprisingly, in view of the town’s coastal situation, the next largest group, of 59, served in the Royal and Merchant Navies and the Royal Marines. Well over half of those in the Royal Navy were career sailors who had enlisted before the War.
Thirty nine served in the Regiments of the neighbouring counties of Kent, Surrey and Hampshire. The Bognor Roll of Honour says that it is also in memory of the men of the 2/9th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment, which had been stationed in Bognor. However, although nine of the men listed are shown as having served in the Hampshires, none were from that particular Battalion.
Twenty eight men were in the Royal Artillery. Twenty six were in the Royal Fusiliers and the other London Regiments. Ten joined the KRRC and the Rifle Brigade. Ten were in the Guards, and eight in the Cavalry and Yeomanry. Seven served in Scots Regiments, six in Irish, and none in Welsh. Eight were in either the RFC, the RNAS, or the RAF.
Fourteen served in Colonial forces, of whom seven were in Canadian units. One was a member of an United States unit.
These figures may change as further identifications are made, and in view of the many unresolved queries, this publication should be considered as a continuing work in progress. I shall be grateful for any comments, corrections and additions.
